Three Cheers For Three Years!

xxx
"It started with an idea and a commitment."
- Shady Del Knight

That's right,
Dell rats
old and new.

Shady Dell
Music &
Memories

is three
years old
today!

It has been exactly three years since the
Shady Dell reopened at its new location...

here at the intersection of
Blogspot and Cyberspace...

three years
since I began
to exhort all
Dell rats to
join the fun!

This blog is a catharsis.

It gives me the opportunity to share with
you my memories of the Shady Dell and
of John and Helen Ettline.

It allows me to express how much
the people, the place, and the music
meant to me.

It's been a fascinating three year journey...

filled with surprises, teaching, learning,

sharing and wonderful new friendships.

As we head into our 4th year together...

there are many more memories to share,

topics to explore, and friends to discover
somewhere out there.

To help us celebrate our third anniversary,

let's look back at some of the unforgettable
images that helped to define the first three
years. As we take this stroll down memory
lane, I will paraphrase the monologue from
a popular Kevin Costner movie.

The monologue seems a perfect fit for the

occasion because this blog came about
when an inner voice directed me to
construct my own Field of Dreams.

People will come, Del.

They'll come to your virtual Shady Dell for
reasons they can't even fathom.

They'll turn up your driveway not knowing
for sure why they're doing it.

They'll arrive at your door as innocent as
children...longing for the past.

“Of course, I won't mind if you look around,”
you'll say. “It was once only 25 cents to get
in and now it’s free!”

They would have passed over the money
without even thinking about it, for it is
money they have and peace they lack.

And they'll walk out to the patio and sit in
shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon.

They'll find they have reserved seats on the
benches surrounding the dance floor where
they sat when they were children and
cheered their jukebox heroes.

And they'll watch the game of life...
the game of love, laughter, tears and
uninhibited youth unfold right before
their eyes.

and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in
magic waters.

The memories will be so thick they'll have to
brush them away from their faces.

People will come, Del.

The one constant through all the years,
Del...has been music.

America has rolled by like an army of
steamrollers.

It has been erased like a blackboard...

rebuilt...

and erased again...

and again...

but music has marked the time.

This blog, these memories: they are a part
of our past, Del.

They remind
us of all that
once was good
and it could be

again.

Oh... people will come, Del.

People will most definitely come.

And come they did. I never dreamed at the
outset that Shady Dell Music & Memories,
the little blog that could, would grow into
an international network of friends -
real friends
who care about each other.
As we begin year four, I promise you that
Shady Dell Music & Memories will continue
to be a place where everybody is welcome,
everybody gets my personal attention, and
everybody is a star if they want to be.

Thank you, my dear friends,

for your continued support of

Shady Dell Music & Memories!

Have a Shady day!

  19. CONGRATULATIONS!!! 3 years is a big celebration and accomplishment! Your post made me go back and look how long mine has been going - May 15th was my 4 year, evidentally. If you are anything like me - it hasn't felt that long! That is for sure!

  20. Lauren - It makes me very happy to have you drop by with anniversary wishes. The greatest thing about blogging is that it brings together not only those who have a lot in common but those who seemingly have little or nothing in common. It is exciting and rewarding when two people from different worlds find ways to relate, share, help, support, learn from each other and grow. Our friendship is a textbook example of the good that can result when people trust and care about each other. Thank you very much, dear friend Lauren, for brightening my day even more with your visit!

Emma - Hello, my dear and special friend in Dublin! I am very grateful for your words and for the bond that has formed between us in the weeks since out paths first crossed. It's a small world after all and I am very thankful that you and I have formed a friendship that reaches across borders and transcends the age barrier. Like John and Helen Ettline before me I never forgot what it's like to be young and that's why it's such a pleasure for me to experience life through your eyes and ears by means of your blog. Thank you very much for remembering me this day, dear Emma!

Kristina - Hello, dear friend, formerly known as Ms. Kanorado! It's been more than four years for you? I'm sure you can relate to what's inside me at this moment. Yes, the time has passed quickly, especially this past year during which SDM&M underwent exponential growth and transformed from a project with a local or regional focus to one with a much broader scope. I am overjoyed to have followers like you who are generations removed from most of my music but nevertheless leave here with something to think about and something to smile about. Thank you very much for stopping by with your words of encouragement, dear Kristina!

With a gazillion bloggers out there I feel very fortunate that we wound up in orbit around each other. Your range of talents continues to amaze me and it is extremely gratifying to know that we get each other's humor. 28. Shady, I'm glad to see you exceeded your own expections and longevity with Shady Dell M&M, especially keeping original Dell rats and adding bloggers from the rest of the country and around the world---especially the pretty ones. I have to chuck at your use of "Shady" because, as long as I've known you you have been nothing but straight forward, considerate, truthful, trusting and trustworthy. I am glad to continue my association with you which dropped off in high school, thanks to that high school site. Since I can't go back in time and take you to some of those shows I used to go to, I can at least share my experiences this way. And you can vanilla-ize me more, regarding a certain period in time. I'm enjoying collaborating with you, and sharing songs and information with other people from back in Pennsylvania and expanding my group internationally. Congratulations on an excellent Birthday piece, and keeping John and Helen's memories alive, along with musical memories.

    Your friend,
    Ron

  29. Ron - Thank you so very much for writing what you did here. I feel the same way. I'm enjoying our collaboration on blog posts. You help to fill in some of my blind spots and I help to fill in yours. Together we educate and entertain an international audience and give many worthy but forgotten artists their props. We also get many valuable anecdotes out of our heads and onto the pages of the blog where they will hopefully be accessed by the curious for many years to come. Thank you again for the birthday wishes, Ron, and we'll be seeing you soon in your next feature!

  30. Happy Birthday Shady!! Thanks for three years of digging deep into our souls and pulling out memories of a special time and place. I pass the Dell frequently and no matter whatever becomes of the house and barn those memories will live on forever. It is good to hear from soul afficiando Dell Rat Ron as well. I look forward to another year of Dell memories.

  31. Brian - You got it, good buddy! I'm so glad to know that you're still following our Dell blog. Dell Rat Ron will be very happy to know as well. The Dell house will soon be ready for its final unveiling, I'm told. It's a very good thing the place has been in the caring and capable hands of the Deroches in recent years or it might be nothing but a parking lot by now. Your continued support means a whole lot to me, Brian, and I hope to hear from you again soon!
